Update: The information in the Indian Express story turns out to be wrong. See this post for both an update and a rant.
Hoping to take a big leap forward in research in pure sciences for a technological edge, the Government plans to introduce a new programme at Bangalore’s Indian Institute of Science (IISc) which will encourage young scientists to pursue research and development in their streams.
In a proposal being placed before the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) tomorrow, the Government has suggested that two students be identified from each of the 20-plus departments at IISc who would get Rs 25 lakh each to pursue their research.
The efforts are part of the Government’s promise in the 2005-06 Budget where Finance Minister P Chidambaram announced a grant of Rs 100 crore to make IISc a world-class university.
